ESCHER’S OUBLIETTE

That thing in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.

1984, George Orwell

the room

in itself

is not

frightening;

it is

the emptiness

that terrifies.

these walls

guard their secrets

as whores

enshroud

remembered

innocents:

wan ectoplasmic wisps,

their mute malisons

paralyzing.

in the silence

i sometimes imagine that

this room

(this womb of fear)

emits

unhallowed susurrations;

that wraiths compete for

the succoring sweat

of blind panic,

feasting on weeping

saprophytic pustules

of my rheumic despair.

the room

in itself

is not

frightening;

Wormsley-Fogit is only

this pullulating

sense:

as

i am

in the room,

the room is

in me …
